South Penine Boat Club

Looking forward to a bit warmer weather, South Pennine Boat Club in Mirfield are to hold an open day Saturday May 8th 2004. Further details will be available soon and the program details will be posted soon. A number of our boats are moored at the club and we will try to organise viewing for any body wishing to do so.

Barrus Shire

Barrus used the London Boat Show at the Excel Centre to release the new Shire Canal Collection. The first thing you notice about the new engines is that very little has changed! The naming protocol now refers directly to the engine HP starting with the Shire 30 up to the most powerful Shire 85. The smaller engines based around the Yanmar 3 & 4 cylinder engines while the Shire 60 & 85 being based on the John Deere 3 & 4 cylinder engine.

The engines now feature 110 amp domestic alternators as standard and a new mounting system, the engine now sitting on mounting rails rather than the old style corner mounts. A number of other small alterations and improvements have also been made.

The new range should build on the reputation for quality Barrus has built over recent years.

Compared to some of the aged Hammerite dipped designs on offer from other manufactures at the show they look to be becoming the leaders in the market.

If you have a boat on order from us, don’t worry all future orders will be fulfilled with the new variants at the original order price!

Christmas 2003 “Joamela” left for her home mooring.

On Monday 3rd November 2003 we will start the process of building “Achieving Together”, a 57” narrowboat for the registered charity SERIOUS FUN.

SERIOUS FUN was conceived of in the living room of a house in Rodley, Leeds, where two good friends, who had been working together for years, looked for an alternative to the provision that existed for young people in their area. Those two people were Dave Norman MBE and Tony Edwards. The organisation SERIOUS FUN was born at that first meeting, and the energy and commitment to the idea that was there at the first meeting has continued ever since. They’re not the most heavily funded group, or the best known group, or the biggest, but what they do, they are the best.

The group takes young people climbing, sailing, canoeing and gets them involved in all sorts of activities they would otherwise not have the opportunity to try. They encourage youth participation, at all levels of the group. They have worked at supporting youth forums, offending-focused groups, local youth football teams, girls groups, boys groups, schools groups, amongst others.

The narrowbaot “Achieving Together” will give yet another opportunity to local youths to learn while having fun.

Bendigo finally got her wheel house after a bit of a delay with the manafactures, but it does look well worth the wait.

17/10/03 “Bendigo” was lifted into the water, she is still awaiting the fitting of her wheel house but other than that is largely complete.

05/10/03 “Bendigo” a 57 foot barge style with wheel house was brought out onto the wharf for final fitting and should be on the water within two weeks.
