Here at Ledgard Bridge we specialise in building high quality residential barges, we do not build broadened or fat narrowboats but our own design of hull that fully meets the legal requirements of ISO/FDIS 12215-5:2005 which other boats of that type seldom do. The design and engineering practices involved in building narrowboats and broad beam boats are far different and this should be a major factor when choosing a broad beam boat.
Unlike replica Dutch Barges and “Fat Narrowboats” our boats are designed specifically with residential use in mind while still far exceeding the requirements for use on UK and European waterways.
We aim to build a boat specific to your needs and your intended cruising area, as such a boat purely intended for UK cruising would differ slightly in design from one intended for extended use in Europe. The cost differences are minor but it pays to get these details correct before building the boat.
The hull style lends itself ideally to open plan layouts with the high gunnel, square sides and good headroom giving a very liveable space. Many choose to incorporate a wheelhouse or rear cabin but others choose to maintain a traditional barge format with a large rear deck.
Unlike many other builders our boats feature structural decks and we actively encourage owners to make use of the cabin roofs for leisure. This becomes particularly attractive if the boat is intended for use in more warmer European climes.
Although the basic concept for our broad beams are now well established; we are still more than willing to adapt the existing concept to meet individual customer’s requirements. Double chined with offshore capability and larger boats intended for specific European waterways have been among some of our recent builds.
